This survey aims to identify the scariest films of the genre, measuring the actual impact they have on the hearts and minds of viewers.

In the search for the scariest movie, not only factors such as heart rate were analyzed, but also physiological reactions and emotional impact.

The study involved 250 participants of various ages. They were fitted with heart rate monitors while they watched more than 100 hours of horror films selected from a list of the 50 highest-rated films from platforms such as IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Reddit.

This horror masterpiece not only marked the history of cinema, but also positioned itself as the most shocking experience. According to this study, “Sinister,” starring Ethan Hawke and released in 2012, won the title.

The average heart rate of a person at rest is about 65 beats per minute (BPM). During the screening of “Sinister,” this rate increased to an average of 86 BPM, representing a 32 percent increase. This was the most important of all the rated films.

“The Night of the Demon” (2010), directed by James Wan, took second place on the list. This film induced an average of 85 heart beats per minute in study participants. In addition, he surpassed ‘Siniestro’ at the peak of the highest pulses, reaching 133 per minute.

“The Conjuring,” another James Wan hit, took third place. The film chronicles the efforts of investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a case of demonic possession. Throughout the tape, he averaged 84 beats per minute and peaked at 129 heart beats.
