Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, César for Best Foreign Film in 2020, Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Film in the same year… In a few months, the latest feature film by Korean filmmaker Bong Jun Ho will create a real earthquake in the world of cinema.
- 8 years ago, the touching final scene of this film brought thousands of viewers to tears.
A film that no one has seen
Acidic, brutal and thrilling, this multi-layered story trap like no one saw it was established as a true phenomenon in the 7th art world and as an instant classic of the big screen. With a staging that is both effective and enjoyable and faithful to its social theme, Parasite benefits above all from sharp and precise writing, drawn like a powerful noose.
If you haven’t found it yet, I suggest you do so before continuing reading this article.
To put it bluntly, Bong Joon Ho’s film doesn’t wait for its final script to take the audience’s breath away, far from it. He also has incredible surprises for them from the end of the first act, which, so to speak, is the climax of his storyline.
The first twist
After patiently investing in Park’s luxurious home by hiring all four of them as servants, Ki-taek, his wife Chung-suk, their son Ki-woo, and their daughter Ki-jung take advantage of the homeowners’ absence to party in the grand living room. Then they are unexpectedly visited by the former housekeeper, whom they themselves fired, and who has been hiding her husband in the basement of the estate for several years.
It is at this point in the film that everything changes and the situation is completely reversed. What follows is a violent clash between the family and the housekeeper, the unexpected return of the owners and a long night of tension for the four heroes.
Already spectacular, this first plot twist (which therefore occurs in the middle of the film) is clearly not the only one, and Bong Joon Ho’s feature film ends, after a few sequences, with a colorful ending.
A spectacular ending
At the birthday of young Da-song (the owner’s son), the tension and humiliation that has been building up since the beginning of the story finally culminates in an extremely violent conclusion.
In revenge for his wife’s fatal fall from the basement stairs, the housewife’s husband, armed with a kitchen knife, sows panic among the guests in the living room.
After a bloody massacre in which several characters are killed or seriously injured, the featurette’s epilogue tells us that Ki-woo managed to escape prison, as did his mother.
Observing Park’s imposing house from a distance, he notices a small light shining on the facade of the building: in turn, Ki-taek, the young man’s father, has taken over the building’s basement to escape justice. His son then promises to retrieve his fortune and buy the property to free him.
The cruel loop created two hours ago by a Korean filmmaker has been closed… very tragically.
