Porto Alegre declares the Villa-Lobos Orchestra an Intangible Cultural Heritage

Bill recognizes the cultural and social importance of the Villa-Lobos Orchestra of Porto Alegre.

A Porto Alegre City Council approved this Wednesday 19 June a bill declaring the Villa-Lobos Orchestra AS intangible cultural heritage of the municipality. The initiative, proposed by councilor Aldacir Oliboni (PT), highlights the importance of the orchestra, which is based at the Heitor Villa-Lobos municipal primary school.

A Villa-Lobos Orchestra is a music education program with 30 years of history, offering artistic opportunities to children and young people in Lomba do Pinheiro, on the outskirts of Porto Alegre. The project aims to provide musical knowledge and collective experiences, contributing to the social transformation of the community.

Developed in collaboration with the Centro de Promoção da Criança e do Adolescente São Francisco de Assis, the program offers more than 300 free weekly consultations in six different locations in the community. Activities include workshops ranging from musicalization of children to the training of musicians and music educators, with the main group consisting of 30 members.

According to councilor Oliboni, the declaration of the Villa-Lobos Orchestra as an intangible cultural heritage recognizes the importance of the initiatives that promote musical education and social inclusion, enhancing culture and offering a development path to young people in vulnerable situations.
