The closing of the Tango Gameworks studio by Microsoft, in May, caused some controversy over the company’s gaming strategy. Matt Booty, head of Xbox Games Studios, gave an interview to Variety in which he was asked about the closure of Tango Gameworks’ operations. The studio, founded by producer Shinji Mikami, had a successful launch in 2023 with Race to Hi-Fibut it was unceremoniously closed last May.

The studio’s closure caused controversy because of this Race to Hi-Fi having been very well received by critics and audiences, winning awards and seeing its sales figures praised by Microsoft executives.

Booty revealed that several reasons led the company to close the studio, but highlighted the change in leadership at Tango in recent months.

“I wouldn’t go into too much detail out of respect for the people who worked at the studio, as everyone worked hard to make Hi-Fi Rush, which is a spectacular game. I think we should consider looking to the future. There are several elements that determine the success of a game, the creative leadership, is the team the same one that launched a successful game in the past?”, commented Booty.

This could be seen as a thinly veiled comment on the studio’s major change since the release of Race to Hi-Fi, which marked Shinji Mikami’s departure from the company. The executive, known for being the creator of the franchise resident Evil and directed survival horror The inner evilleft Tango Gameworks in April 2024. Just over a month later, the studio closed.
