A charismatic actor seen in great directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Gus Van Sant, Matt Dillon stars this week in a French film playing the legendary actor: Marlon Brando!
She is cast in Maria, a film about the plight of actress Maria Schneider, often associated with her role in the sultry Last Tango in Paris alongside Marlon Brando.
With this news, let’s take a look at the most loved movies by Internet users in Matt Dillon’s filmography.
This is the 2005 movie Collision, directed by Paul Haggis, rated 3.9 out of 5 (16,392 ratings, 892 reviews)
Story ? Two car thieves. Mexican locksmith. Two police inspectors who are also in love. A housewife and her husband, a district attorney. All live in Los Angeles. They and many others do not know each other, their lives should never have crossed.
However, over the next 36 hours, their destinies will collide and reveal what each wanted to hide or not see…
Why should you see it? Because it’s the Deauville Grand Prix and the Oscar winner for Best Picture. A few months after its triumph in France, the feature film from director Paul Haggis (screenwriter of Million Dollar Kid and creator of…Walker Texas Ranger!) sprung a surprise by playing favorites Munich and The Secret of Brokeback Mountain.
Is it still a better movie? Not really, let’s be honest about this, the fault lies with a string of choral films (a popular format at the time, after the success of Amours chiennes and 21 Grams) that were a little too big for an over-ambitious script.
But collision derives power from its casting (Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser, Sandra Bullock…) and especially his brutal depiction of post-9/11 America, characterized by fear of others, violence and racism. A snapshot of the era, not so Manichean after all.
A small selection of internet reviews:
Mark T (5/5):A masterpiece, nothing to throw away, not even 1 cm of film, the story hits with great intensity, brilliantly shot and orchestrated, what more can I say.”
Caine78 (4/5):A very talented screenwriter, Paul Haggis is clearly no slouch when it comes to wielding a camera. Offering a wonderful gallery of strong, often moving, and relatively complex characters, Clash didn’t steal the Oscar for Best Picture and proved to be the best example of what American cinema has to offer.“
HawkMan (4/5): “Collision is a dramatic, powerful, poignant, powerful and very well acted film. The film allows us to follow different characters, against the background of racism rooted in America, and who will see their fate meet the revelation of what each wanted to hide or not reveal. In short: a shocking, thought-provoking film that reflects destiny.“
