The Israeli army confirmed the incident and said the soldiers’ conduct violated the institution’s rules. The images sparked outrage. The UN rapporteur accuses the Israelis of using the wounded as human shields. Israeli soldiers tied a wounded Palestinian to the hood of a military vehicle during a military operation in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli army admitted to the incident and said its soldiers violated the institution’s rules.

Images from the scene, shared widely on Saturday (22/06), went viral and show a man, visibly injured, tied to the hood of a military jeep as the vehicle crossed a relatively narrow road. The military vehicle, despite carrying a wounded man, passed without stopping two Red Crescent ambulances.

The images sparked outrage on social media. Several users accused Israel of committing war crimes and a UN speaker suggested that the Israelis used the wounded man as a human shield.

“It is impressive how a state born 76 years ago has managed to literally overturn international law,” Albanese, head of the UN special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, wrote in X.

Abdulraouf Mustafa, a Palestinian ambulance driver, said Israeli soldiers refused to hand over the injured man to them. “The jeep passed and the injured man was on the hood,” Mustafa told Al Jazeera. “One arm was tied to the windshield and the other was tied to the abdomen. They walked past us. They refused to hand the patient over to us.”

According to medical sources, the man is Mujahed Azmi, 24 years old, from the Jenin refugee camp, but who was with friends in Jabriyat, between Burin and Jenin, in the north of the occupied West Bank.

Violations

The army said the man was injured during an “anti-terrorism operation” to search for suspects in the area.

“In violation of orders and operational protocols, the suspect was taken by the forces and tied to the vehicle,” the Israeli army confirmed, admitting that this form of action “does not comply” with its values and that it will investigate what is success.

The injured man was handed over to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Azmi told AFP that he was wounded by gunfire and was left unable to move behind an Israeli military vehicle for more than two hours. “When (the soldiers) arrived, they stomped on my head, attacked my face, legs and hands, which were injured. They laughed,” he said.

The soldiers “threw him onto the hood of the jeep”, which the Palestinian said had an extremely hot surface.

Doctors at Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin confirmed that Azmi is still hospitalized there.

Azmi, with “a fracture and injuries”, underwent emergency surgery and will undergo further operations, said Bahaa Abu Hamad, a surgeon at the hospital. “He has a burn on his back, from the back of his neck to his lower back,” he added.

Jenin is a stronghold of Palestinian armed groups and the Israeli army frequently carries out operations in the region.
