Like every Sunday, HBO Max premiered a new episode of “House of the Dragon.” In the second, the consequences of the assassination of Prince Jaehaerys for the Green Council and the Black Council were presented, in addition to the conflict of two family members that ended in tragedy, although a little different from the book. Here we explain it to you.
‘House of the Dragon’: Duel of twins Arryk and Erryk in the series
At one point in the episode, Criston Cole is seen making a plan to avenge the death of Prince Jaehaerys. He orders Ser Arryk, a member of the royal guard, to go to Dragonstone and assassinate Princess Rhaenyra, posing as her twin brother Erryk, who in the first season decided to support the young woman and recognize her as the rightful queen of Westeros.
Arryk begins his journey and easily outwits the fortress soldiers, gaining entry with no problems. After sneaking around the fortress and entering Rhaenyra’s room, her twin Erryk appears and they engage in an intense sword fight.
The movements are so fast that it is impossible to tell who is Arryk and who is Erryk, but both are seriously injured. At the end of the battle, it appears that the soldier who swore allegiance to Rhaenyra kills his brother Arryk by stabbing him with a sword. This causes Eric so much pain that he decides to kill himself by falling on his own sword, but not before saying, “Your Majesty, forgive me.”
One of the most popular theories as to why he took his life is that Ser Erryk, being an honorable knight, knew that killing a kinsman is one of the most terrible deeds in Westeros and that his soul would be cursed according to the beliefs of the gods. . Besides, he could not live knowing the crime he had committed.
How was the fight between the twins Arryk and Erryk in the book “Fire and Blood”?
Although this scene was one of the most talked about and tense, in the book both knights lose their lives, but their fight is not identical to the one presented in the series. According to the book ‘Blood and Fire’, Rhaenyra never witnesses the duel as it takes place in another room of Dragonstone and the clash of their swords wakes almost everyone who lived in the room.
Another major change is that Eric was the last knight to fall and didn’t end up next to his brother’s body. However, before his death and in the middle of the battle, the tears of both are present, as they were previously very close, but their different loyalties turned them into enemies.
