New Fortress Energy (NFE) inaugurated this Tuesday the Gás Sul Terminal (TGS) in Barbilonga Bay, in São Francisco do Sul (SC), the first for the regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the southern region of Brazil.
The project received 500 million reais and has a contract signed with the transport company TBG, which manages the Bolivia-Brazil gas pipeline (Gasbol), and will be an option to meet the demand for thermoelectric power plants in the South, South-East and Central-Western regions and industries, such as ceramics, metalworking and glass.
According to the NFE, the region currently faces natural gas supply constraints, with more than 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of existing facilities lacking fixed gas supplies or long-term contracts (PPAs).
The gas processing unit that will operate on the TGS is the FRSU Winter vessel. 277 meters long, the ship has the capacity to store 138 thousand cubic meters of LNG – equivalent to 83 million cubic meters of natural gas – and to regasify up to 15 million cubic meters per day.
The FRSU Winter was chartered by Petrobras and has 35 crew members on board from six countries: Brazil, Croatia, Philippines, Romania, Russia, Indonesia and Spain. From September 2024 the rental will be carried out directly by ENERGOS, shipowner and owner of the FSRU.
The Santa Catarina regasification terminal is NFE’s second project in Brazil. In February the company opened an LNG import terminal in Barcarena (PA). With a contribution of 300 million reais, the project will serve two gas-fired thermoelectric plants currently under construction by NFE, with investments of approximately 7.0 billion reais and the first phase is expected to open in 2025.
