Research published by Google for Startups highlights the need for strategy and manpower for AI companies in Brazil
OR Google for Startups reported that 63% of Brazilian AI startups still lack short- and long-term strategies for developing and using AI technology. The research was carried out in collaboration with Box 1824 and presented during an event this Tuesday (25th), in which Canaltech was present.

Uncertainties about artificial intelligence
The study, titled “Startups and Generative Artificial Intelligence: Unlocking its Potential in Brazil,” revealed that artificial intelligence has yet to be developed in the country. According to the survey, there is a high level of uncertainty about the effectiveness parameters in using Generative AIwhich leads to difficulties in external investments and hinders access to qualified professionals on the market.
Even when working directly with the technology, 22% of companies surveyed said they didn’t know how to quantify and measure the results of using AI. Furthermore, 25% underline that they do not have a specific budget for this purpose, while 46% of companies believe that a public investment could help in the adoption of AI.
For Trakto CEO Paulo Tenório, Canaltechthe expression “AI” scares many people, so there is a need for calm in the face of uncertainties and the search for funding.
“Everything related to artificial intelligence was interpreted as in the film Terminator, so you need to know how to talk and present the technology to people and customers,” Tenório emphasizes. “My vision is to focus on the company’s problem and how we can improve it with the use of more advanced computers. From there we will be able to use artificial intelligence to solve as many problems as possible,” he concludes.

Lack of manpower
The research also highlighted that the lack of qualified professionals is one of the main problems faced by AI startups in Brazil. The data shows that 59% of companies say that education and awareness about the technology are fundamental to the development of generative artificial intelligence.
On the other hand, those who already possess the necessary knowledge end up leaving the country to work in companies around the world. A record talent drain occurred between January and December 2022:
- 200% increase in professionals who left Brazil and went to Portugal;
- 114% increase in talent moving to the United States;
- 544% increase in skilled people leaving the country to work in Australia and New Zealand.
According to the director of Google for Startups for Latin America, André Barrence, the document highlights the lack of preparation of the workforce.
“There is a lack of structured initiatives that prepare the workforce to deal with advanced technologies”, underlines the director of Google for Startups. “The shortage of qualified professionals is exacerbated by talent flight, where Brazilian professionals are often attracted to opportunities abroad due to better working conditions and wages,” he adds.
Regulation matters
Finally, the study revealed that 83% of the companies interviewed attach great importance to specific regulation of generative AI. This is because the lack of clarity in related policies hinders popular awareness on the topic.
For Huna COO Marco Kohara, startups live between a rock and a hard place.
“The ideal is to demonstrate that we use AI responsibly, with the population and with scientific rigor”, underlined Kohara at the Canaltech. “We have clear parameters and methodologies to demystify the technology, with publishable results for anyone to verify. Our role is also to educate and regulation would help with this,” she concludes.
It’s worth remembering that Big Tech likes it Apple already offers free artificial intelligence courses in Brazil to facilitate access to technology.
