‘Fire and Blood’ is a successful novel that was adapted into a television series called ‘House of the Dragon’. In its second season, there are significant changes from the book’s original story, but one in particular will be a problem in the coming chapters. Here we explain it to you.
“House of the Dragon 2”, Jaehaerys death caused a problem in the series
The HBO Max-produced drama saw the Green Council suffer the loss of Prince Jaehaerys when he was assassinated by two men hired by Daemon Targaryen, whose original purpose was to exterminate Aemond Targaryen.
After this tragedy, it is emphasized that King Aegon II is left without a male heir for the succession to the Iron Throne, since he has only two children in line: the late Jaehaerys and the twin Jaehaera. However, this problem does not exist outside of the series, since in the book “Fire and Blood” Maelor, the third son of the monarch, who does not exist in “House of the Dragon”, is mentioned as the future ruler of Westeros. .
This means that while in the original story Aegon II has an heir, in the adaptation he does not, which could lead to a more intense struggle for power and a seat on the Iron Throne.
Something interesting to note about the second episode of “House of the Dragon” is that Aegon appears distraught over the loss of his son, but it’s strange not to see him concerned that if he were to die, his kingdom and the lineage would be over, especially now that the Dance of Dragons, meaning the war against his half-sister, Rhaenyra Targaryen, is about to begin.
Who would be Aegon II’s successor in ‘House of the Dragon 2’?
Following the logic of succession and the events that marked the Green Council, Eamond Targaryen, brother of Aegon II, is considered the next ruler. However, this could lead to rivalry, as the prince has a great thirst for power and wants to show that he is ready to rule.
After Aemond, next in line is Alicent’s fourth son, Daeron Targaryen, who has yet to appear on the show, but was mentioned at the end of episode 2 of the new season, suggesting that he will likely appear soon or in season 3.
Finally, if Aegon II wanted to prevent his brother Aemond from coming to power, he would have to name his daughter Jaehaera as his heir. However, this would be a contradictory act, as the Green Council was responsible for imposing Visery I’s son, even though Rhaenyra had been proclaimed by him as Queen of Westeros.
We just have to wait and see what decision the showrunners will make, but one thing is for sure, it will be a major change that could cause controversy among fans.
