Presenter Ana Clara Lima, 27, revealed she “disappeared” from Instagram after being diagnosed with colitis, a disease that affects the large intestine.

“I take medicine and act as a complete amoeba to rest my body, because I couldn’t sleep,” the former BBB commented on Instagram.

What is Ana Clara’s illness?

According to Dr. Hélio Antônio Silva, doctor of the Brazilian Society of Coloproctology, there are different types of colitis: “The most common is acute colitis, secondary to a viral or bacterial infection. It causes diarrhea that can last up to 14 days, with pain abdominal pain accompanied by cramps, malaise and fever. In more serious cases, blood loss in the stool and dehydration may occur”, explains the doctor.

Symptoms of colitis vary:

• Liquid and constant diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Blood in the stool
• Fever
• Weight loss for no reason
• Apparent lack of appetite
• Tiredness
• dehydration anemia

Generally, diarrhea and abdominal cramps are the most common symptoms. People with a genetic predisposition are more likely to develop colitis.

According to Dr. Hélio, when the infection is caused by a virus, treatment involves replacement of water leaks and symptomatic medications. When it comes to a bacterial infection, it requires the use of antibiotics.
