Hidden Meanings: The Colors of Emotion in ‘Inside Out 2’
The film begins with the introduction of the emotions Anxiety, Envy, Shame, Ennui and Nostalgia, which are responsible for controlling the protagonist’s mind and suppressing the other primary emotions we already knew, namely Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger and Fear .
While you might think that their looks and colors were chosen solely to wow viewers, it turns out that the film’s production designer, Jason Deamer, gave a little more insight into the look and color of these emotes.

Worry
This fast-paced, edgy personality and crazy-looking character is represented by a vibrant orange that could mean caution. This color would be associated with emotional states of worry, anxiety and mental tension in the inner world of the characters due to its complexity which can manifest itself in various ways, such as negative anticipation, fear or extreme nervousness in the face of unknown or challenging situations.
Shame
Riley’s biggest emotion is characterized by her pink skin color, which can convey a sense of vulnerability and fragility. Furthermore, this tone is what appears on people’s faces when they express this emotion and blush. It has happened to all of us!
Envy
This character could be one of the most adorable because of his tiny size, his huge eyes that light up when something catches his eye, and his deep turquoise blue color, which can be an analogy for water, since it looks calm in surface, but complexity and tension remain in the background.
Boredom
In “Inside Out 2”, Ennui is a dark purple figure that contrasts sharply with more vibrant and energetic emotions. His appearance and tone symbolize lack of interest, monotony and almost non-existent energy, which is why he hardly moves at all.
Nostalgia
Although he appears fleetingly in two scenes of the film, his design has a deep meaning. Nostalgia is represented as a tender gray grandmother, which evokes the feeling of melancholy and reflection. So the color it has could be a metaphor for the passage of time and the fading of memories.
