In April 2023, The Hollywood Reporter told us that the legendary studio bought the film and television rights to Street Fighter to create a new adaptation for the big and small screens.
According to American media, Legendary will collaborate with the Japanese company Capcom, which created the Street Fighter video games. Will they be able to forget 1995’s Nanari with Jean-Claude Van Damme and another completely unsuccessful 2009 adaptation, The Legend of Chun Li?
First round, fight!
Similar to the success of Nintendo and Illumination’s collaboration for Super Mario, we can only hope that the Capcom-legendary duo can also deliver a Street Fighter adaptation worthy of the name.
Either way, the project is well underway as Sony Pictures and Legendary have just announced an official theatrical release date. The film will be released in theaters on March 20, 2026 in Uncle Sam’s country and on March 18, 2026 in France.

Street Fighter vs. Super Mario!
No additional information has been released at this time; We don’t know who will direct the film or its actors, and even less what story it will tell. We’ll have to be a little more patient before we know more. This new version of Street Fighter will meet its main rival with the sequel Super Mario Bros., which will be released in 2 weeks on April 1, 2026.
Recently, another fighting video game franchise saw the light of day on the big screen: Mortal Kombat. Very violent and particularly bloody, the work has the merit of being better done than 1995’s Nanar and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. The sequel will also hit theaters on October 22, 2025. Let’s fight!
