US President Joe Biden embarks on a series of fundraising events in two states on Saturday as he works to end a crisis of confidence in his re-election campaign after a poor debate showing that dismayed his Democratic colleagues.
Biden and first lady Jill Biden will visit New York’s exclusive Hamptons for a campaign fundraiser hosted by hedge fund billionaire Barry Rosentein. Later in the day, he will travel to New Jersey for a fundraiser hosted by New Jersey’s wealthy governor, Democrat Phil Murphy.
Fellow hedge fund founder Eric Mindich and his Tony Award-winning producer wife Stacey, celebrity couple Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, and actor Michael J. Fox are all listed as members of the New York event’s host committee, according to an invitation seen by Reuters.
Biden declared at a rally in North Carolina on Friday that he intended to defeat Republican rival Donald Trump in November’s presidential election, giving no sign that he would listen to Democrats’ demands that he drop out of the race.
Biden’s verbal stumbles and occasionally rambling answers during Thursday night’s debate heightened voters’ concerns that the 81-year-old may not be fit to serve another four-year term.
Biden’s campaign boasted Saturday that it had raised more than $27 million between the day of the debate and Friday night, but questions remain about whether the debate’s course will hurt fundraising, at least in the short term.
