La Haine: You all know this scene, but no one noticed this detail

La Haine celebrates its 30th anniversary next year! Directed by Mathieu Kasowitz, this drama stars Wintz, Hubert and Said, three young men who are marked by a coma in their neighborhood due to a mistake caused during a police arrest. The audience will follow them for 24 hours, the day after the night riot.

Vincent Cassel, Hubert Coude and Said Taghmaoui play the three main roles, but we can see in secondary roles or even very small roles: Benoit Magimel, Edouard Montute, Francois Levanthal, Karin Viard, Philippe Nahon, Zinedine Soalem or Vincent Lyndon.

And among the film’s many iconic sequences, one is particularly memorable, also because it was inspired by a similar scene in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. The action takes place at the beginning of the film: who looks at himself in the mirror, points a revolver at the window with his fingers and declares “Are you talking to me like that?”

But this moment was captured amazingly. Actually, Vincent Cassel is not looking at the mirror, but at the hole in the wall! And it’s the duplicate that mimics its actions at the start of the scene!

A very clever trick that allows, without special effects, to photograph the Vinz from the front, without any reflection that a real mirror brings.

The dramatic context in which La Haine takes place is inspired by the death of Makome M’Bovole, a 17-year-old boy, which occurred in 1993 at a police station. A police inspector has been jailed for eight years for willful violence causing death without intent.
