Italian coach Luciano Spalletti will remain at the helm of the national team even after Switzerland’s elimination in the round of 16 of the European Championships.
The information was confirmed this Sunday (30th) by the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, during a press conference.
“It makes no sense to interrupt a multi-year project that started just eight months ago,” he said, a day after Italy’s embarrassment in the competition.
Gravina also underlined that we must “have faith” in Spalletti, recalling that the Azzurra will return to the field in 60 days and “it makes no sense to think that by changing the project an Mbappé will emerge in two months”.
During the interview, the FIGC president also confirmed that he will not resign from his position and assured that, even if some criticism hurts, he absorbs the constructive ones.
“I don’t run away from responsibility. Criticism hurts, instrumental criticism linked to resignation. Non-constructive criticism, let’s listen to each other. There is no way anyone can govern our world from the outside, this applies to politics and everyone around is asking for his resignation by Gravina and Spalletti.
It doesn’t exist,” he added.
According to Gravina, the new FIGC elections cannot be held before the Paris Olympics. “We will do it at the first available date. Criticism yes, but let’s make it constructive”.
He also reiterated that “it would be an unimaginable disaster not to reach the World Cup for the third consecutive time.”
In turn, Spalletti, who should remain in charge until 2026, the year in which his contract expires, took responsibility for Italy’s elimination and revealed that “it was not the best Spalletti possible”.
“I read that they attributed it to me for having raised the tone too much and used myths to follow. But I have examples to follow. There are still many things to see, my commitment will be total. We must be honest, in the history of these 14 matches, of my journey. Up to a certain point we were fine. Yesterday we took an important step backwards which cannot be accepted”, he explained.
The current coach of the Azzurrini also stated that his mission will be to rejuvenate the squad, paying attention to the lack of personality. “They didn’t give me the answers I was looking for.
We need new strength and energy, we need to bring in players from the bottom, the young players”, he declared, underlining his “disappointment for yesterday’s match” because he didn’t see a reaction from the team.
Now the Azzurri will return to the field only in September, when they will face France and Israel in the Nations League.
