Lula: It is incorrect to place the blame for any fiscal adjustment at the slightest

The President said in an interview with Bahian radio that decoupling social security benefits from the minimum wage is not economically correct.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva he said once again that he does not intend to separate Social Security benefits from the minimum wage. The statement was made on Monday 1st in an interview with Rádio Princesa, in Feira de Santana, Bahia.

“I don’t do that because it’s not fair from an economic standpoint, it’s not fair from a political standpoint, and it’s not fair from a humanitarian standpoint that you try to blame any adjustment that you have to make on the minimum,” he said.

Lula continued: “The minimum is the minimum. There is nothing less than the minimum. The minimum is what the law establishes to guarantee workers the possibility of eating the necessary calories and proteins.”

Lula recalled the formula of the valorization policy minimum salarywhich consists of transferring the inflation of the previous year and the change in the brown domestic product (GDP) of the last two years, and has indicated that it does not intend to change it.

“We have determined that we will provide inflationary replacement plus the average GDP growth over the last two years. In other words, we are increasing the purchasing power and survival power of the humblest people,” he said.

The president also said the government was “working hard” to revise spending, but stressed that he wanted to “increase revenue.”

“If we spend wrongly, we need to stop spending wrongly,” he said. “I learned from Miss Lindu: Let’s only spend what we have.”

Lula added: “If we have to take on a debt, we have to know if we have the money to pay. If we don’t have the money to pay, don’t take the debt, because you will go bankrupt. That’s how I want to take care of Brazil. I want to increase the wealth, I want to increase revenue, I want to increase distribution and I want to increase the well-being of the Brazilian population.”

Lula gives an interview alongside the governor of Bahia, Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT). In Feira de Santana, the PT has the deputy Zé Neto as its pre-candidate. After the visit, the president travels to El Salvador.
