Created by federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), the event is a Brazilian version of the main congress of conservative politicians in the United States; find out who will be attending the congress
BRASILIA – Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and Argentine President Javier Milei will meet at a summit of right-wing politicians this weekend in Balneário Camboriú, on the coast of Santa Catarina. The event is a “Brazilian version” of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), which has brought together names from US conservatism in annual conferences since 1973.
The organization of CPAC Brasil is the responsibility of the Instituto Conservador Liberal, chaired in Brazil by the deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), son of the former Brazilian president. The institute was awaiting the departure of the Argentine head of the executive, until his departure for Balneário Camboriú was confirmed by Casa Rosada this Monday 1.
During his presence in Brazil, Milei is not expected to meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). It is commonly considered rudeness and even a diplomatic provocation when a head of state sets foot on foreign soil and ignores his sovereign.
Two other international speakers have been confirmed for the event to date. One of the speakers is Chilean politician José Antonio Kast, leader of the far-right Republican Party, which lost the country’s elections in 2017 and 2021. The other is Mexican actor and singer Eduardo Verástegui, known for being a staunch right-wing critic of abortion.
The Secretary of Public Security of São Paulo, Guilherme Derrite, and the Governor of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello (PL) appear prominently in the list of speakers on the official website of CPAC Brasil. The conservative congress will also be attended by deputies from the hard core of Bolsonarism in the National Congress. (See the list of confirmed guests at the end of this report.)
In the United States, CPAC has been held since 1973 and aims to discuss electoral strategies for the expansion of conservative thought in the country. The first edition of the “Brazilian version” was held in 2019, the first year of the Bolsonaro government, after a collaboration between federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro and Matt Schlapp, president of the American Conservative Union (ACU), one of the founding bodies of the American Congress.
According to the official website of the Brazilian CPAC, anyone who wants to attend the event in Balneário Camboriú without being invited will have to pay R$ 249. To become a “diamond member”, which has VIP access to the convention, a mug and an official T-shirt, you have to pay R$ 5,000.
The last edition of CPAC Brasil took place in September last year in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais. During the congress, the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), was interrupted by an anti-vaccine speech while preaching the importance of right-wing unity in the municipal elections in October.
“Next year, municipal elections, we need to elect good councilors and good mayors here in Minas and throughout Brazil and the right needs to work together, we need to be together, we can’t…”, said the governor, speaking interrupted immediately.
Zema was already at the end of his speech when a woman in the audience said she had been fired from the Minas Gerais Sanitation Company (Copasa) for not taking the Covid-19 vaccine. The governor did not respond to the protest and concluded his speech by thanking those present at CPAC.
