‘I can’t stand this kid’: John Wayne wasn’t the only one to attack Clint Eastwood

In 1982, when he was a box office hit in the friendly film 48 Hours, Eddie Murphy was invited to dinner by then-star Marlon Brando, actor of The Godfather and A Streetcar Named Desire. And during this dinner, which he recalled in the podcast The interviewMurphy recalled this moment when Brando attacked Clint Eastwood:

Eastwood? “I’m sorry”

I mean, it was a long time ago, he told me: I can’t handle that child with a gun. I replied, “What kid has a gun?” And he: “He’s on the poster!”

Murphy then looks at the poster in front of him and recognizes Clint Eastwood. So it was the star of Detective Harry that Marlon Brando called “the kid”. For a little context, Brando was born in 1924 and Eastwood in 1930: so there’s only six years between them.

  • John Wayne wasn’t a big fan of the “Man With No Name” singer either!

In 1982, Eastwood starred in two films that he also directed: Honkytonk Man, the story of a country singer struggling with alcoholism and a career in decline, and Firefox, Absolute Weapon, an action film set against the backdrop of the Cold War.

Brando is in early retirement

During the same period, Brando was not on tour. After John G. Avildsen’s thriller “Formula” (1980) with George Scott, which depicts a policeman’s investigation into the disappearance of a synthetic oil formula invented by the Nazis, did not star or work again. Back to the great white and dry season (1989).

Eddie Murphy never toured with the On the Quays cast. She is currently in a new episode of Beverly Hills Cop on Netflix. As for Brando, who died in 2004, he is currently being played by Matt Dillon in Maria, a biopic about Maria Schneider, an actress who was sexually assaulted while filming Last Tango in Paris:
