In 2023, Netflix premiered “That ’90s Show,” a “spin-off” of “That ’70s Show” set 20 years after the original series. Although the production features a new group of teenagers led by Leia Forman (daughter of Eric and Donna Forman), it has on more than one occasion given a nod to its predecessors.
In part 1, for example, the audience once again saw Wilmer Valderrama, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher in their iconic characters Fez, Jackie and Michael Kelso.
However, fans of the original series have noticed a major absence in references to the new story, which only became more apparent in part 2.
‘That ’90s Show’ Doesn’t Explain What Happened to ‘That ’70s Show’ Steven Hyde
When the Netflix series brings back any of the previous characters, it usually explains what happened to them. So we know that Jackie and Michael have been in an on-again, off-again relationship for years (last seen they were about to remarry) and that Fez has become a successful stylist, still hoping to find his other half.
However, there is one question about the original characters that has yet to be resolved: what happened to Stephen Hyde after ‘That ’70s Show’? He was an essential part of the group and, until now, hasn’t even been mentioned, so there was no resolution to his character.
Danny Masterson’s ‘That ’70s Show’ Steven Hyde Co-star Controversy
While the show’s production hasn’t given reasons why it ditched Stephen Hyde, it could all be centered around the controversy surrounding real-life actor Danny Masterson.
In late 2017, the actor was accused by four women of sexual abuse. Two years later, the situation escalated into a lawsuit against him and the Church of Scientology, of which he was a prominent member and which, the victims claimed, had protected him for years.
In June 2020, he was found guilty of raping three women, although it wasn’t until May 2023 that he was convicted of two of those charges. He is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence.
It’s worth remembering that, before his legal troubles, Danny Masterson had reunited with Ashton Kutcher in “The Ranch,” also on Netflix. When the allegations against him were revealed, the production company deleted his character from the series and severed all working relationships with him.
In fiction, what do you think became of Stephen Hyde from “That’70s Show”?
