The legal thriller returns with new cases and mysteries, keeping the original production team
Apple TV+ has announced the renewal of “Above Suspicion” (Presumed Innocent). Originally a full-length miniseries, the legal thriller will get a second season after becoming the most-watched drama series on the platform.
Renewal Details
Plot details for season 2 have not yet been released, other than it will involve a new, suspenseful case. As with other successful miniseries that continued after a limited season, such as “The White Lotus” and “Shogun,” it’s likely that some characters will bridge the seasons.
Continuity and expectations
There is no clear script for the sequel, which adapted Scott Turow’s book of the same name. The 1987 bestseller was followed by “The Burden of Proof” in 1990, but the series introduced new characters, such as defense attorney Mya, played by Gabby Beans, who does not exist in the books.
The protagonist Rusty Sabich, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, does not appear in Turow’s books. However, there is a 2011 literary sequel, “Innocent,” which again pits Rusty against Tommy Molto, played by Peter Sarsgaard in the series.
History and team
It is worth remembering that “Above Any Suspicion” already had a film version with the same title in 1990, directed by Alan J. Pakula and starring Harrison Ford, and this production did not have any sequel. The new version stars and is produced by Jake Gyllenhaal, who received critical acclaim for his performance, starring in the first series of his career.
The thriller follows Chief Prosecutor Rusty Sabich on his journey involving a gruesome murder. A colleague is found raped and dead in her apartment. He takes charge of the investigation, but cannot prevent the police from learning of his personal involvement with the victim. The married prosecutor was having an affair with his colleague. Even with a friendly police officer in charge of the investigation, Sabich soon finds himself treated as one of the suspects in the crime and must fight for his innocence and reputation while trying to keep his family and marriage intact.
Created by David E. Kelley (“Little Big Lies”) and produced by J.J. Abrams (“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”), the production also starred Ruth Negga (“Preacher”), Bill Camp (“The Queen’s Gambit”), Elizabeth Marvel (“The Color Purple”), Peter Sarsgaard (“Batman”), O.T. Fagbenle (“Black Widow”), Lily Rabe (“American Horror Story”) and Renate Reinsve (“The Worst Person in the World”).
