Although he has not held any public events since he launched his pre-candidacy for mayor of São Paulo in early June, presenter José Luiz Datena (PSDB) is moving to build the structure needed to contest the elections. After taking a break from TV on the 29th, the main initiative was to start a conversation with marketer Felipe Soutello. The conversation took place with PSDB representatives and not with the journalist. Affiliated with the acronym, Soutello was an advisor to Ricardo Nunes (MDB), but in the last two years he has distanced himself from the mayor’s project.
Datena’s history of electoral setbacks – he has already given up on running on four occasions – still leaves doubts about his participation in this year’s municipal elections. Toucan leaders, such as the national president, Marconi Perillo, and the municipal president, José Aníbal, and the presenter himself, guarantee that this time he will run. Opponents, however, remain skeptical, as they consider the journalist unpredictable.
The signs are dubious: almost a month after the official campaign began, there is still no date for the first public event and the PSDB has not yet defined when it will hold its conference, one of the steps to advance the candidacy and which must be carried out between July 20 and August 5.
Vacation
On the other hand, the presenter went on vacation, stopped presenting his program as required by electoral legislation, announced that once his rest period is over he will take unpaid leave to campaign and is preparing to participate in the hearing that will be held at the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo last Tuesday.
PSDB will provide Datena with the resources needed for the campaign, but, with the party’s downsizing in recent years, the Tucanos will have a smaller share of the electoral fund: the party will receive R$ 156 million to support candidates across the country, an amount less than the R$ 170 million, in adjusted values, received in 2020. “I will not put in a cent,” Datena said. State in June.
Soutello is affiliated with the PSDB. He participated in the campaigns of José Serra (PSDB), Geraldo Alckmin, now in the PSB, and former mayor Bruno Covas, who died in 2021 due to cancer. He was one of the organizers of the Lula-Alckmin ticket for the 2022 elections.
In this dispute, the marketing agent worked on the campaign of Simone Tebet (MDB) and was favorable to her declaration of support for the PT member in the second round against Jair Bolsonaro (PL). With the exception of Pablo Marçal (PRTB), all the main pre-candidates spoke with the salesman about the municipal elections.
Thirst
Tabata Amaral (PSB), for example, sought Soutello after breaking up with marketer Pablo Nobel, as shown in State Column. However, she ended up signing an agreement with the head of digital communications of Eduardo Paes (PSD) in Rio de Janeiro.
In another sign of its desire to structure itself, the PSDB has rented a new headquarters for its São Paulo board of directors, after the old one was the subject of disputes with former president Fernando Alfredo. The new address, on Rua Minas Gerais, near Avenida Paulista, will serve as a sort of “headquarters” for Datena’s campaign when the electoral period begins on August 16. The information was published by the magazine I wait and confirmed by State.
La Banda is also preparing for the coming months without Datena. The expectation is that he will remain focused on the electoral campaign, moving away from the program Brasil Urgente at least until the end of the elections, unlike what happened in 2018: that year the host left the program before June 30, as required by law, but suddenly returned to the air and buried his candidacy for the Senate.
Test
Last week, the station tested other presenters for the afternoon police news program. Felipe Garraffa debuted as presenter last Saturday. But Banda’s main bet is Joel Datena, son of the PSDB pre-candidate to lead Brasil Urgente. The complication is that Joel already hosts a morning show on the station, which will be extended. However, commercials for Brasil Urgente, with Joel as presenter, are already circulating within the station. Banda has been contacted, but has not responded.
Datena is organizing his pre-candidacy at the same time as he is negotiating the renewal of his contract with the television station. According to R7 columnist Flávio Ricco, he has agreed to reduce his salary by 70%, but has left the renewal deadline for two more years if he is not elected mayor.
The information is from the newspaper The State of S. Paolo.
