“House of the Dragon” Season 2 showed a major battle in episode 4. While it gave the series that dose of action that fans were clamoring for, it also left a few questions unanswered. For example, what is the future of the dragon Sunfyre, after the terrible attack he suffered with Aegon?
Warning: Spoilers ahead for “House of the Dragon” season 2, episode 5 and book “Fire & Blood” by George RR Martin.
What is Sunfyre’s place in ‘House of the Dragon’?
It is worth remembering that in chapter 4 of the series, Aegon and Sunfyre were savagely attacked by Aemond and Vhagar.
In episode 5, the focus turns to finding out if the king survived and the political intrigue within the Greens. The only time the dragon is mentioned is when Rhaenyra hints to Jacaerys that Sunfyre died at Rooks Rest.
While the winged creature’s death has not been confirmed, many “House of the Dragon” fans have taken to social media to express their concerns, mourn the loss and even theorize about Sunfyre’s future.
One of the most common assumptions is that he did not die, but that Aegon’s followers protect him, hide him, and care for him until he regains the strength to fight again.
This is how Sunfyre’s story ends in “Fire & Blood”
Fan theories aside, George RR Martin’s books, upon which the “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon” universes are based, offer some answers. “Fire & Blood” tells what happened to the beast after the attack on Rooks Rest.
According to the novel, Cole orders his army to tend to the wounded dragon. He initially feeds on the bodies left behind after the fight, and when they disappear, sheep are brought to him. This is how Sunfyre manages to recover.
However, Aegon’s mate takes some time to reunite with his rider as Walys Mooton takes control of the site. Although he sends his soldiers to kill the dragon, he fights back and even finishes off Mouton himself. After this fight, Sunfyre leaves Rooks Rest.
He and Aegon meet again at Dragonstone, where the king plans to attack Rhaenyra. There they fight their final battle together, where they defeat Princess Baela. Although they are victorious in this fight, Sunfyre is so injured that he can no longer fly and refuses to eat. So the dragon dies at Dragonstone and Aegon mourns his loss.
It’s worth remembering that ‘House of the Dragon’ has made some changes to ‘Fire & Blood’, so we can’t be sure if this will be the fate of the dragon.
Let us know in the comments what you’d like to see happen with Sunfyre.
