Disney is the target of a hacker attack that exposes more than a terabyte of data

Hacktivist group Nullbulge claims responsibility for attack, citing artists’ rights concerns

Disney was the target of a hack, with hackers claiming to have more than a terabyte of company data. “Disney is investigating the matter,” a company spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

Authorship and motivation

The hacktivist group Nullbulge claimed responsibility for the attack. The group describes itself as “a hacktivist group that protects artists’ rights and ensures fair compensation for their work.” Nullbulge told the Wall Street Journal that it targeted Disney “because of the company’s handling of artist contracts, its approach to artificial intelligence, and its blatant disregard for the consumer.”

Compromised data

The information was leaked on dark web forums and includes a large amount of internal Disney communications, studio information, advertising campaigns and other data, almost all of it from the Salesforce-owned Slack communications platform. Additionally, NewsBytes said that the stolen data includes information about upcoming Disney projects, including concept art for new games, and employee login and personal information.

Series of cyber attacks

The incident is the latest in a series of cyberattacks targeting media and telecom companies this year. In the spring, Roku disclosed that more than half a million accounts had been compromised in a data breach. In May, Ticketmaster owner Live Nation reported that it had been hacked by “criminals selling user data on the dark web.” This month, AT&T disclosed an incident in which “nearly all” of its wireless customers’ call and text records were obtained, though the content of the messages was not tampered with.

There is no indication that the Disney attack is related to the incidents involving cloud services provider Snowflake, which were part of the attacks on Ticketmaster and AT&T.
