“Thor: Love and Thunder”: Understanding who the screaming goats are in the movie

“Thor: Love and Thunder” is full of subtle references to comic books and pop culture, but the film features two subtle characters: the goats that the God of Thunder earns as a reward.

While they seem like something totally random, animals have names and have their place in Norse mythology and Marvel comics. Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr are the two goats who, in mythology, pull the chariot of Thor, the God of Thunder.

In the Marvel comics they are given another version under the names Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder and they first appeared in 1976’s Thor Annual Vol. 1 # 5, in the midst of the War of the Gods. Plus, creatures can even come back to life, and this has happened a few times in the comics.

Despite being easily underestimated for their looks and shrill screams, the two possess great powers and help Thor on his journey, traveling great distances to defeat the Butcher of the Gods, Gorr. Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder possess super strength and travel between realms at high speed, and in the comics they are even capable of damaging the Mjölnir hammer.

In fact, the ship brought by the duo has a name in the comics: “The Goat Boat”, or literally “O Bote das Cabras”.

The duo even had their own posters. Watch:
