Wade Wilson was a highly trained mercenary who dreamed of a better life with his beloved Vanessa when he developed a series of deadly cancerous tumors. He joined Department K, which led to his induction into the Weapon X program. Scientists implanted a failed derivative of Wolverine’s healing factor, and while it cured his cancer, it warped his body and scattered his mind.
The first chronological meetings between Wolverine and Deadpool showed their initial antipathy towards each other. In Wolverine #88published in December 1994, Logan and Wade Wilson tracked down the Weapon X of the time, Garrison Kane, and of course, when they met, they both fought ferociously. Deadpool managed to escape Logan’s clutches, but the rivalry between them increased.
Deadpool’s “Big Breakthrough”
When Deadpool was created by Rob Liefield and Fabian Nicieza in 1991, his personality was completely different from the one we see today. It was only from 1997 onwards that the creation and contribution of screenwriter Joe Kelly transformed him into a talkative and more good-natured mercenary, capable of constantly breaking the “fourth wall”.
During the 2000s, Deadpool became a more consistent presence in other Marvel Comics magazines, mostly as comic relief. And, in addition to Kelly’s excellent run, readers began to see more collaborations between the Mercenário Falastrão and icons like Spider-Man and Wolverine.
After the successful 2016 film, the character “exploded”: he became a constant presence in the specials and in the main titles and events of Marvel Comics. Wade Wilson became a definitive hero and was one of the first recruits by Logan to join the title team The disturbing X-Force.
Over the last four years, during Krakoan EraWilson, while not technically a mutant, was part of the X-Force led by Wolverine, mirroring the bonds created between the characters by actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman on the big screen.
“Bromance” between Wolverine and Deadpool
The relationship between Marvel’s mutants began in the 2009 films, in The Origins of X-Men: Wolverine. The storyline showed Logan and Wade Wilson as members of the special operations team Team X. In the end, Wilson became a guinea pig for Weapon XIII, a sort of iteration of the project that injected Logan’s bones with adamantium. They fought until Deadpool’s death, with his head cut off.
Over the years, the friendship between actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who play Deadpool and Wolverine respectively, has been instrumental for Marvel Comics to further explore this relationship in the comics as well, especially after the first film. Dead Poolin 2016.
Since Reynolds was always making fun of Jackman, in quotes between Deadpool and Wolverine, not only in the plots but also in promotional material, this “bromance” only grew, including in other jokes about Deadpool 2published in 2018.
And, as we know, from that moment on this interaction only increased, until it reached a point where there was nothing left to do but reunite Reynolds and Jackman in Deadpool and Wolverinewhich will be released in theaters next week, on July 24th.
