Who was Lady Jane, the inspiration for the Prime Video series?
Better known as the “Nine Days Queen,” Lady Jane Grey was crowned Queen of England and Ireland for a brief period: from July 10, 1553 to July 19 of the same year. She ascended the throne after the death of the then king, Edward VI.
Jane was chosen to take over the crown on Edward VI’s deathbed and he made this wish official by writing her into his will. Angered, one of her half-sisters, Mary, enlisted the support of her supporters to seize power and sentenced Jane to imprisonment for high treason. Although her death was declared, months passed before it actually occurred.
Unfortunately, her father took part in a rebellion against the new queen, Mary, and that was the final straw: Jane’s execution was officially scheduled and carried out days later.
