Residents of St. Paul reported having felt, in several neighborhoods, an earthquake around 11 pm on the night of Thursday 18th of this month. The phenomenon, which is associated with earthquake of magnitude 7.3, recorded in Chile, was noticed by people in neighborhoods of several regions of the city. There are no records of victims, according to the Civil Protection.
The reports were made by residents or people who at the time of the earthquake were in Perdizes, Pompeia, Pinheiros (west zone); on Avenida Paulista, in Santana (north zone), as well as Mooca and Tatuapé, in the east zone. On social media, a user said he felt the same thing in the south of the city.
The Civil Protection confirmed that “light tremors” were recorded “in several regions of the capital São Paulo”, and reported that the phenomenon is a reflection of the earthquake that occurred in the northern region of Chile and Argentina, at about 100 km deep, according to the USP Seismological Center
“Experts also emphasize that the tremors felt in the city of São Paulo are of low intensity and present a minimal risk of damage. To date, no victims or events related to the event have been reported,” the agency said. “The State Civil Protection continues to monitor the situation
I felt like my building was going to collapse, resident reported
When he noticed that the building where he lives was shaking, consultant Luiz Carlos Nogueira Pedro thought he felt a kind of vertigo. Later he noticed that other residents of the neighborhood where he lives, in Pompeia, also felt the tremor.
“I was working at the office table. I felt like I was shaking and, at first, I thought it was vertigo,” Nogueira said. State. “But as soon as it passed, I was sure I felt the table shake.”

“Then I thought it might be an earthquake, but I went to the window and everything was calm. I entered the condominium group and no one was talking. I also thought it might be dizziness. After about another two minutes, someone commented in the condominium group,” the consultant added.
A Mooca resident even reported that many people have evacuated the building where they live.
People on social media also reported feeling the building shake. “Earthquake in Tatuapé, SP now at 10:56 PM. Seriously! Seriously! I’m on the 15th floor,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter). “My God, did an earthquake just happen or am I crazy? Everything in the house shook,” another user commented.
“Brother, I’m in the South Zone, in Congonhas, I felt sick and the fans started shaking, I think that was it!”, one user reported. “It was shaking here in the Paulista region too,” another said. “I thought I was going crazy. My bed was shaking,” a third wrote.
The tremor is a reflection of the earthquake in Chile
The tremor felt by the inhabitants of São Paulo is the reflection of a magnitude 7.3 earthquake with epicenter in the Antofagasta region, in northern Chile, and registered at 9:50 p.m. (1:50 a.m. local time) by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC, its acronym in English). According to the agency, the depth of the phenomenon was 128 kilometers.
