Marvel has severed ties with Jonathan Majors

Although the fifth and sixth films of The Avengers have been part of Marvel’s plans (and Phase Six of the MCU) for a long time now, it’s worth remembering that the studio suffered a major setback in December last year, when it decided to sever ties with Jonathan Majors, an actor who would have been a key player in the first story.

Groomed by Marvel to be Kang, its new big bad: the character even appeared in the series Loki and in the movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania -, Majors was convicted in late 2023 of third-degree reckless assault and harassment, a conviction that prompted Casa das Ideias to immediately remove him from its staff.

The company’s sudden and irreversible decision ended up imploding the story of the fifth film of the film. The Avengersinitially called Kang Dynasty and character-focused. This, in turn, left a gaping hole in the plot of the title and its sequel Secret Wars. The decision has led to many questions and, so far, few answers about the future of the MCU.

The films would have a two-part story

The possible hiring of the Russo Brothers for the next two films of The Avengerstherefore, suggests that, just as happened in endless war AND Ultimatum, Kang Dynasty – which should change its name – and Secret Wars focuses on a single story, divided into two parts and made under the direction of the directors.

The comic arc that gives its name to the sixth film in the saga must be based in Secret Wars 2015. It’s a storyline that Anthony and Joe have previously said they wanted to adapt, in which all of Marvel’s multiverses are destroyed; and only one universe can survive.

Before the Russo Brothers, Marvel even hired Destin Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) to direct the fifth film of The Avengersbut the director left the project in November 2023. As for the sixth film, sources say that Shawn Levy (Deadpool and Wolverine) was initially considered, but the director would have preferred to focus on his new Star Wars film at Lucasfilm.

The fifth and sixth films of The Avengers will arrive in theaters in the United States on May 1, 2026 and May 7, 2027, respectively.
