X-Men: Press pause at 1 hour 33 minutes and watch Magneto and Charles Xavier play chess

When you (re)discover a feature film adapted from Marvel comics, it’s recommended to keep your eyes open and pay attention to the smallest details. Indeed, like many works of pop culture, the films depicting the adventures of superheroes created by Stan Lee and his associates hide a lot of hidden elements intended for the most perceptive and observant fans.

This is obviously true for the latest installments of the MCU, but also for the first products to feature the Maison des Idées logo in the early 2000s. So, 24 years ago, the first adventure of the X-Men on the big screen and in live action (portrayed by Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman) was already decorated with several Easter eggs.

In 1 hour, 33 minutes and 29 seconds…

As recently explained @GaaryWrld’s account on XI recommend pressing the pause button on your remote control at 1 hour, 33 minutes and 29 seconds, the final sequence of the feature film.

In this scene, Magneto has just been locked in a plastic prison after being arrested. Charles Xavier visits him and, as usual, the two rivals play chess.

It is the chessboard and the location of the various pieces that you will have to focus on to better understand the whole symbolism of the sequence and especially the psychology of the two opponents.

… Take a good look at the chess pieces

As stated @GaryWrld In his post, Magneto plays transparent figures and has already sacrificed a significant number of his pawns to advance: he seems completely devoid of resentment towards his troops and is ready to do anything to achieve his goals.

Charles Xavier, on the other hand, plays carefully and uses his pieces sparingly, prioritizing their defense: he lost almost none of them.

This clever little detail, which we probably don’t notice when we first discover the film, is a subtle and clever way of summarizing the two protagonists’ state of mind in a simple image.

The last dialogue of the film, which happens a few seconds later, perfectly confirms the contradiction between them.

“This war is going to happen and I’m going to fight it by any means necessary”Magneto declares.

“And you will always find me before your eyes, my old friend”Xavier answers.
