While Charlize Theron yesterday gave us some not-so-reassuring news about The Old Guard 2, which we’ve been waiting for for several years, the actress still continues to work with Netflix. According to DeadlineHe is in final talks with the platform to star in Apex, a thriller to be directed by Balthasar Kormakur.
described as “mixture between Silence of the lambs and Free solo“, a cannibal film and an Academy Award-winning documentary, Apex presents itself as a gripping thriller that follows a mountaineer who wanders into the wild.
If the synopsis is rather incomplete, we know the filmmaker’s work in the genre: Kormakur has actually made survival films, from Mount Everest to the lost drift in the Arctic.
Quality movie please!
While we’ll have to wait to see the results on our screens, know that Apex is a project that Netflix has a lot of faith in. To the point that the film is based solely on Jeremy Robbins’ screenplay. Where the platform is used to greenlight productions that already have a director or actor.
If American Giant had Theron and Kormakur’s names in mind at the time, the latter would logically take the time to read the script before signing on.
Apex joins Netflix’s highly anticipated slate of feature films, which already includes Kathryn Bigelow’s next film. We’re counting on them to raise the bar overall after a couple of disastrous outings (Atlas and Riposte to name a few).
If Hollywood and platforms in general have experienced a writer’s and actor’s strike in the past year, the observation is much broader: Netflix offers less stuff… and lower quality.
If there is a change of strategy on their part, we especially hope to see the return of great directors to the platform, with quality proposals and taking more risks.
