During production last year, the film was frequently interrupted by lightning, winds and heavy rain: ‘A huge storm destroyed the set’
The production of Twisterssequel to the classic Afternoon session released in 1996, faced great difficulties when filming in the American state of Oklahoma during storm season.
The director Lee Isaac Chung was interviewed by Vanity Fairand revealed that he was determined to capture the essence of Tornado Alley (an area of the United States where there is high development of tornadoes), and that the decision to film there brought unexpected challenges and significantly impacted filming.

During production, which took place last year, the film was frequently interrupted by lightning, strong winds and heavy rain:
Sometimes I wondered if the weather knew what it was doing, you know what I mean?”
The director admitted that he suspected Mother Nature held a grudge against the sequence he was directing.
It was Chung’s choice, the director, to film in the rural area of Oklahoma during peak storm season to capture the ‘darkest skies’. The filmmaker grew up on a farm in Arkansaswhere tornadoes are also common. He says he is used to living and working in stormy circumstances:
It just became a fact of life for me, and I think for everyone I knew growing up there.”
Chung said the filming schedule was often delayed due to constant lightning strikes, so the production relied on meteorological experts to help navigate the storms and plan evacuations when necessary.
We had a full-time meteorologist, and their only job was to figure out what was going to happen to us each day.”
Although no one was injured, the sets suffered considerable damage:
One day, we were filming the farmers market we had built. A huge storm came and destroyed the set while we were hiding,” Chung recalled.
What is the story of Twisters?
In the new film, we meet Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a storm chaser who retired from the profession after an incident during college. Since then, she has been studying storm patterns safely in New York City.
However, when his friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos), invites her to test a new revolutionary phenomenon tracking system, she needs to put fear aside to destroy tornadoes and save lives.
Along the way, she meets Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), who enjoys sharing his storm-chasing adventures on social media and promises to make Kate’s job even more dangerous.
