The woman, who left behind six children, sought medical attention months after giving birth due to severe abdominal pain
An obstetrician has been denounced by the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS) for a medical error that caused the death of a patient. During a cesarean section performed in June 2023, in a hospital in Parobé, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, the doctor allegedly left gauze in the body of the patient, Mariane Rosa da Silva Aita, 39 years old.
The woman, who left behind six children, sought medical attention months after giving birth due to severe abdominal pain. After several surgeries, including the removal of gauze, Mariane did not survive and died in August of the same year. The cause of death was abdominal sepsis, caused by an infection, and acute kidney failure.
Public Prosecutor Sabrina Cabrera Batista Botelho accused the doctor of manslaughter, claiming that the professional acted negligently during the surgery. The midwife was also accused of ideological forgery for omitting in medical documents the presence and removal of gauze from the patient’s body.
Given the seriousness of the case, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested the suspension of the doctor’s surgical activity, in addition to compensation for the victim’s family.
