New on Netflix: If you like Deadpool’s humor, then this is another superhero movie for you!

In 2016, DC Studios brought together their universe’s worst villains on the big screen in Suicide Squad. Despite very poor reviews and behind-the-scenes controversy, David Ayer and his team pulled off a minor heist, grossing over $750 million at the worldwide box office. That’s a pretty impressive score for Suicide Squad 2, but…

Neither a reboot nor a remake

The DC Films division has seen quite a few changes internally in recent years, with a new president and questionable studio directions. After being fired from Disney/Marvel, for which he notably directed Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn (who will lead the studio with Peter Safran in 2022) was hired to direct the Suicide Squad sequel. his project? Create a superhero version of the Bastard Twelve.

A self-confessed geek and a huge comic book fan, Gunn takes a completely unexpected direction as it’s a sort of reboot of the previous film, but with a slight twist: certain characters like Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). ) or even Rick Flag, came back and new faces from hell appeared on this team.

When it comes to selling the film, Warner prefers to assume the WTF side of the project: Suicide Squad is aimed at those who have seen the first part, as well as those who are not familiar with the world at all. Gunn rehearses his key scenes – like hiring supervillains, going through Bel Reve prison, etc. – but imagines a new story:

This team of anti-heroes has to face not the witch (Cara Delevingne) but Staro, a giant starfish…

Pure entertainment

Crowned with the success of Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn brings his colorful, musical and extraordinary style to The Suicide Squad. He made this superhero movie for pure entertainment that never tries to be serious.

We are facing a gang of criminals and they behave like them. The characters are there to take advantage (especially Peacemaker, played by the excellent John Cena) and chill us with jokes that are cheeky but effective.

Gunn enjoys introducing certain characters only to kill them off the next minute, offering quality cameos and top-notch acting. And above all, some of the villains have such ridiculous powers (like the polka dot man with exploding colored pustules) that they add a touch of WTF to the movie.

Suicide Squad has received mixed reviews in theaters and an average rating of 3.3 out of 5 on AlloCiné: If some people were put off by this unusual proposal, others definitely cut ties with DC productions after that.

Regardless, the film remains a must-see or re-watch on Netflix today for summer entertainment.
