You may miss satellites. However, if there’s one series to discover this year, it’s this one. Ambitious and exciting, this mural tells a love story over thirty years. One that brings together Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer), a closet politician, and Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), a curious and idealistic young man.
When they meet, America is under McCarthyism and hunting communists – but also homosexuals. Therefore, it is a secret relationship that the two protagonists will maintain over the years and through the various founding moments of their country.
Satellites is such a rich and complex series that it ticks several boxes at once: spy thriller, romance, political thriller, intimate drama… and even some particularly prominent scenes between the two main characters – reminding us that it’s not a period series. Not necessarily synonymous with boredom.
From Philadelphia to the Companions
Behind this project we find the creator Ron Niswaner, who is none other than Philadelphia screenwriter Jonathan Demme, the main film LGBT+ representation in cinema with Tom Hanks.
The author did a lot of research to write the companions. In fact, many sequences in the series actually happened.
“From Joseph McCarthy to Roy Cohn, everything historical figures say publicly on the show, they actually saidRon Niswaner of AlloCiné explains. The audition scenes come from contemporary recordings, as do McCarthy’s speeches. This also applies to the lie detector scene, these are questions that were actually asked. It is meticulous work.”
This precision is felt in every line and every scene. These are the many features of this series that you should not miss.
Satellites are available on Paramount+.
