Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: Channing Tatum brings the top down… and the bottom.
After filming in the thriller “Trapped”, Steven Soderbergh is interested in Channing Tatum’s youth. The latter was actually a stripper in Tampa, Florida at the age of 19. The director is interested in his experience and the cinematic potential of this environment Magic MikeFocus on reproducing atmosphere rather than approaching reality.
In addition to Channing Tatum giving a perfectly sincere performance, Matthew McConaughey takes on the role of the eccentric owner of a strip club in Dallas without even reading a single line from the script! Surrounded by the equally talented Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello and Adam Rodriguez, they don’t hesitate to indulge in terrifying choreography directed by Alison Faulk, a former collaborator of Britney Spears and Madonna.
Starting from a seemingly superficial and rather ordinary subject, Soderbergh manages to create an intelligent film that avoids the clichés behind the scenes (creating the team, rehearsals, parties, personal lives of the dancers…).
The budget is 5 million dollars. Magic Mike is a financial success in the American territory, bringing in 112 million dollars. Three years after its release, Gregg Jacobs, first assistant director and regular Soderbergh collaborator, is directing its sequel, Magic Mike XXL. And the third installment, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, is currently in production…
