French judoka Clarisse Agbegnenou, 31, has been an example to mother-athletes by successfully bringing breastfeeding to the Paris Olympics. Following her calls and campaigns for actions that meet the needs of mothers, the International Olympic Committee has made hotel rooms available to French breastfeeding athletes near the Olympic Village.

Additionally, their teammates can stay at these locations to care for their children while the athletes compete in the Olympics.

Judoka since childhood

Clarisse is a true fighter. Born prematurely along with her twin brother, she had to face weeks in an incubator, surgery for kidney problems and even a coma that lasted almost a month. The doctors also spoke to her parents about the possibility of turning off the machines, but they preferred to wait.

Her parents’ determination has played a key role in shaping who Clarisse is today. She began practicing judo at the age of nine and, at 14, joined the French division of Orléans. In 2009, she joined the National Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance, which specializes in training French champions.

Athena

After winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Clarisse gave birth to her daughter Athena in June 2022 and, 11 months later, won her sixth judo world title.

The two-year-old is the result of the athlete’s relationship with osteopathic doctor Thomas Grava, who often attends competitions together with his daughter.

With photos from tours, photoshoots and even workouts, Athena turned two on June 15. “2 years of our little goddess, 2 years since you changed our lives, 2 years of pure happiness, 2 years since we became your parents, 2 years of breastfeeding, 2 years of true love,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
