Stranger Things might just be a metaphor for a little boy struggling to grow into adulthood, who sticks to his Dungeons and Dragons games while his friends go off and mature. We already see in season 3 when Will wants to play Dungeons and Dragons and his friends are no longer interested in the game.
This hypothesis is compatible with the vision of the Duffer brothers and their strong respect for 1980s pop culture, the works of Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, and these adventure films for children, which combine the coming-of-age and fantasy.
