The Chavista leader received 51.2% of the votes, according to the CNE
The National Electoral Council (CNE) has proclaimed Nicolás Maduro, President of Venezuela, the winner of the elections held last Sunday (28).
According to the organization, the Chavista leader obtained 51.2% of the votes, while his opponent, former ambassador Edmundo González Urrutia, obtained 44.2% of the votes.
The current Venezuelan president appeared in person at the CNE headquarters for the official proclamation.
At the same time, the governments of nine Latin American countries (Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay) expressed “deep concern” about the way the elections were conducted in Caracas.
“Our governments will request an urgent meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) to issue a resolution that preserves the will of the people,” the nations’ foreign ministries said in a joint statement.
France, Spain and the European Union have called for “total transparency” in the trial on Venezuelan soil.
“The international right-wing coalition led by the United States is trying to carry out a new institutional coup of a fascist and counterrevolutionary nature in Venezuela. We already know this film, it is called Guaidó 2.0,” Maduro said.
After officially proclaiming his victory, the president also revealed in a press conference at the CNE that the authorities had foiled an assassination attempt against him.
“They wanted to machine-gun me. We know this because there are prisoners and they have confessed,” the officer said.
