The Venezuelan dictator has harshly criticized the protests recorded this Monday against his re-election and called for civic mobilization to “defend peace”
The dictator Nicolas Maduro He harshly criticized the protests held this Monday, 29, in Venezuelain opposition to his re-election, calling the protesters “drug addicts” and accusing the United States of being behind the movements. In his speech, held at the Miraflores Palace, the dictator cited the meeting with Brazilian Chancellor Celso Amorimwho is in Caracas to observe the electoral process.
“Today I said this to Celso Amorim, my friend, Chancellor of Brazil, advisor to President Lula. The whole union, so-called, of the global far right, of fascism, sees Venezuela as the jewel in the crown, to put its hands on it. And behind it, imperialism, always with its false diplomacy, with deception,” he said. “They always come with a smile and something to talk about, but underneath what they bring is a dagger or a bomb,” he added.
The day after the presidential elections in Venezuela was marked by spontaneous demonstrations in several regions of the capital Caracas and in other cities in the interior of the country, against the Maduro’s re-election in question. The militarized National Guard dispersed many of them with tear gas and rubber bullets. Gunfire was also heard in some neighborhoods.
During his speech, Maduro showed several videos that he linked to Monday’s protests, including attacks on statues of former President Hugo Chávez. Monuments were demolished in La Guaira, a port near Caracas, and in the city of Mariara, in the central state of Carabobo.
“They went to attack Comandante Chávez, President Comandante, the best president Venezuela has had in the last 150 years,” Maduro lamented in the televised speech. “It is the typical image of foreign color revolutions,” Maduro said.
