Giulia Penalber Falls in Quarterfinals as Wrestling Favorite

Paris – The only representative of Brazilian wrestling at the Olympic Games, Giullia Penalber won a match and lost in the quarterfinals of the women’s under 57 kg freestyle category at Paris-2024, this Thursday (08), at the Arena Champ-de-Mars. She beat Rckaela Aquino, from Guam, but then fell against Moldovan Anastasia Nichita. Now the Brazilian is waiting for the rest of the competition to know if she will be able to go to the repechage to fight for the bronze medal.

Seventh seed of the tournament, Giulia Penalber made a quiet debut against Rckaela Aquino. The Brazilian scored in the first seconds and, after a minute of fighting, managed to get close to advance on the stage. She then met the strong Anastasia Nichita, world champion in 2022 and runner-up in 2023. Giulia also fought well, but was defeated, also due to contact.

Now Giullia is waiting for the rest of the competition to find out if she can get back in the running. If Anastasia Nichita reaches the final, the Brazilian will go to the repechage to fight for the bronze medal. In the semifinals, the Moldovan will face the Chinese Hong Kexin, this Thursday, around 14:00 (Brasilia time). The repechage will take place on Friday (09), as will the medal fight.

This is the first Olympic appearance for Giullia Penalber, sister of former judoka Victor Penalber. The 32-year-old from Rio qualified thanks to the Pre-Olympic World Championships, which took place in May. Last year, she won the gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, achieving the second-best sporting result for the country in the competition.
