“James Cameron Is a Tyrant”: Independence Day Director Reveals the Unexpected Reason He Didn’t Remake This Sci-Fi Classic

Roland Emmerich is looking forward to working with James Cameron again.

In 1966, Richard Fleischer released one of the most influential science fiction films in history: Fantastic journeya plot that takes place inside a sick scientist and that at the time caused some agitation among the public. The film has been parodied and awarded a thousand times, but has never had a remake: it came very close thanks to James Cameronbut the project did not go ahead.

At the time, the director decided to dedicate his efforts to Avatar and limit themselves to the production of the remake – of which, in 2007, the direction was confirmed Roland Emmerich. Shortly after, however, Emmerich also decided to abandon the film because, presumably, he did not like the script.

This is what we believed until then, but during the San Diego Comic-Con, the director of independence Day he made it very clear the real reason why he didn’t remake Fantastic Voyage.

“James Cameron is a tyrant and at a certain point I gave up. I asked myself: ‘Is this his film or mine?’ I can’t do it, I don’t care. It’s so simple, when someone wants to tell me something and is more powerful than me, I I’m leaving the project.”

Something tells me it’s unlikely that Emmerich and Cameron will attempt a new collaboration anytime soon. The remake of Extraordinary journeyin the original language, has already passed into the hands of Paul Greengrass, Shawn Levy AND Guillermo del Toro – but we recently learned that Cameron finally wants to do it move forward with the project.
