Lightning Strikes Basilica in Italy, Starts Fire

The flames were controlled by the Pisa Fire Brigade

Lightning struck a basilica near Pisa, Italy this Sunday (18), causing a fire.

The fire involved a wooden beam, but the immediate intervention of the firefighters prevented the flames from causing further damage to the roof support structures.

Authorities have temporarily banned tourists and believers from entering the Basilica of St. Peter the Apostle, located in San Piero a Grado, a hamlet of Pisa.

The beam affected by the fire will be subjected to more in-depth checks to analyse the extent of the impact that the fire has had on the structure.

The basilica, in Pisan Romanesque style, built between the 10th and 12th centuries, is dedicated to the apostle Peter who, according to tradition, landed at a nearby river port.

The storm that hit Tuscany also scared the inhabitants of Manciano, in the province of Grosseto, as lightning seriously damaged the bell tower of the church of San Leonardo.

The debris fell on some parked cars and nearly hit a group of tourists.
