CNU: Abstention from Enem dos Concursos was high, but as expected, says Esther Dweck

BRASILIA – Economy Minister Esther Dweck said in a preliminary assessment of the CNU (Unified National Competition), held on Sunday 18, that abstention from the tests was high, but within the government’s expectations.

Some 2.1 million people have registered for the Enem dos Concursos competition, which brings together candidates for 6,400 vacancies in the federal public service in 21 different bodies.

The final data on attendance will be released by the ministry at the end of the day, but the minister assured that there is “nothing more than expected”.

“Abstention in public competitions is high; we saw it recently in the Central Bank competition, which had a very high abstention rate despite it being a very expensive competition,” the minister said. He spoke briefly to the press after President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva’s visit to the competition monitoring center established by the Ministry of Management in Brasilia.

He said many people enroll and end up dropping out because they can’t prepare in time. “Here in Brasilia, for example, 10% of the adult population has enrolled, which is a significant figure,” he added.

There are other factors, she says, such as the attempt by employees in other public service careers to try an opportunity to earn more and give up.

“We will give this number at the end of the day, but it is not higher than we imagined. We recognize that the numbers are not low, but when we were given the opportunity to give up, very few people gave up, only 30,000 people can take the test,” he said.

In his speech, Dweck said there had been reports of power outages in Rio de Janeiro, but these had been resolved before testing began and that schedules had been met as planned.
