Last February, Francis Ford Coppola celebrated his classic outsiders from auditions for young movie stars who became legends. Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio, Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe were part of this magical cast.
“42 years ago, we introduced caste to outsiders in a unique wayCoppola wrote in an Instagram post. “We had all the actors together on set and we took turns auditioning different actors for different roles.“
He continued: “It was interesting because each of them was watching their competition, so even though it could have been a volatile situation, it turned into a very positive situation. A natural respect and a sense of friendship arose between them. The result worked perfectly and reminded me of my camp counselor days.“
The shared images show the actors reading excerpts from the script outsidersReleased in 1983, it included lines of dialogue from roles they did not play. Anthony Michael Howell thus appears on tape reading for the role of the main character Ponyboy, which was assigned to C. Thomas Howell.
Several cast members added comments under Coppola’s post recalling the experience. “The people who came to those auditions…many went on to have great careers“, he wrote C. Thomas Howell. “amazing“.

Recall that the film takes place in 1966 and tells the story of two rival teenage gangs in the small rural town of Tulsa, Oklahoma: Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell), soda pop (Rob Lowe) and Darrell (Patrick Swayze) belong to a gang of greasers, young criminals from underprivileged neighborhoods. Their rivals are the sots, the children of the bourgeoisie. After a fight to the death, Ponyboy and Johnny (Ralph Macchio) should try to escape from the police.
