Released online on August 16, The Union became the most viewed film in France on Netflix within days. This action comedy, featuring the duo of Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry for the first time, has become a new hit on the platform despite mixed reviews.
Two childhood sweethearts – one turned secret agent, the other a construction worker – team up on a high-risk mission. Their reunion will also be an opportunity to rekindle the flame of their past romance, provided of course they survive the many dangers that await them.
Is the sequel working yet?
Many Netflix subscribers were disappointed that kisses were not exchanged throughout the film. A decision that was not left to chance, as director Julian Farino confirmed to our colleagues Diversity.
During this interview, the filmmaker revealed that the absence of this scene is not a refusal to kiss the two actors. But is this a deliberate choice to test the public’s willingness to see a sequel? According to the latter, Netflix’s instructions were before The Union was filmed “This idea could last for three films”.
A kiss and maybe more
“If we’re coming in asking for a kiss scene from a movie, then we’ve done our job well.” Julian Farino summed it up. An observation that is not really convincing, but which proves to us that the platform has many ideas for any of its productions. And looks like these two actors are all set for a sequel!
“When they kiss, it’s all over. We’re hoping that if we can shoot another one, the seduction game will continue.” Halle Berry told Variety. His partner Mark Wahlberg is ready to go even further: “If we go ahead and film more, I imagine there will be more than a kiss.”
This is enough to raise the temperature, but also to make Internet users impatient. Now it remains to be seen whether the audience for the feature film will be considered big enough to launch one or more sequels. But with such an involved duo, it’s hard to imagine the platform ignoring a lucrative new franchise…
