After losing in regulation time, Corinthians needed to rely on their goalkeeper in the penalty shootout to survive in the continental tournament
This Tuesday (20), Corinthians eliminated Red Bull Bragantino in the Copa Sudamericana, at the Neo Química Arena. After losing in regulation time by 2-1, they prevailed on penalties by 5-4. A highlight for goalkeeper Hugo Souza, who saved three penalties.

In the quarterfinals of the 2024 Copa Sudamericana, Corinthians will face the winner of the clash between Rosario Central and Fortaleza.

First half with goals and superiority of Corinthians
The first 45 minutes belonged to Corinthians. Despite the lead in the first duel, Ramón Díaz’s team took control. With speed and shots from all sides, Timão gave goalkeeper Fabricio a hard time. After insisting a lot, the ball went in. Garro took a risk, the ball deflected by the defender ended up in the net, 1-0.
The goal did not take away Corinthians’ momentum. The reaction began at 26 minutes. First, Eduardo Sasha hit hard and saw the ball die in the net. Four minutes later, the corner found Luan Cândido, who deflected and turned the result, 2-1. In the final minutes, Corinthians launched an attack and had a chance with André Ramalho. The defender hit the ball for the first time in the penalty area and Fabricio saved it with his fingertips.
Sanctions controversy
In the end, an exciting dispute. Hugo Souza took three penalties, two of which were decisive to avoid elimination and Corinthians beat Red Bull Bragantino 5-4.
