The phenomenon brings significant changes in the weather; a new cold front is expected to spread across Brazil
An extratropical cyclone in the Atlantic Ocean began to affect southern Brazil this Wednesday 21, bringing significant changes in the weather. Rain, strong winds (between 71 and 90 km/h) and the arrival of a new cold front are expected to spread over Brazil and last until Saturday 24.
What is a cyclone?
According to the National Institute of Meteorology of Brazil (Inmet), a cyclone is a circular movement of winds in a clockwise direction, which occurs in a place with low atmospheric pressure. Cyclones are divided into three categories:
- Tropical: More dangerous, they occur in the tropics and are generally not associated with cold fronts.
- Extratropical: They form in places outside the tropics and are the most common in Brazil. They occur throughout the year, but are especially typical in winter.
- Subtropical: It combines the typical characteristics of the other two types of cyclones and is usually not associated with cold fronts.
How does an extratropical cyclone form?
Borges explains that for an extratropical cyclone to form, “an intensified low-pressure center and associated meteorological features, such as a cold front,” are needed.
Borges emphasizes that there are no security alerts expected for Rio Grande do Sul during the duration of this cyclone.
