The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a U.S. agency, announced Thursday that it has closed an investigation into sudden braking and immobilization problems in 1,194 autonomous vehicles operated by GM’s self-driving taxi company Cruise.
The NHTSA said that after the investigation began in December 2022, there was a decrease in sudden-stop crashes following the company’s promoted software updates.
NHTSA determined that cruisers were involved in 10 collisions, four of which resulted in human injuries. The agency analyzed data on sudden stops in 7,632 crashes.
The company, along with other autonomous vehicle technology companies such as Alphabet’s Waymo and Amazon’s Zoox, has come under intense scrutiny over safety concerns following several crashes involving their vehicles.
