Police search for perpetrator of knife attack that killed 3 in Germany

An unidentified man stabbed several people during a street party to celebrate the anniversary of the city of Solingen in the west of the country.

Germany’s Interior Minister said he was “deeply dismayed.” German police said Saturday (24/08) they were still searching for the man who killed three people and injured eight others – five of them seriously – in a knife attack at 5 p.m. Friday night at a street festival in Solingen, western Germany.

“The police have mobilized a large number of forces in the old town of Solingen, including special forces. Victims and witnesses are currently being questioned,” the North Rhine-Westphalia state police said in a statement.

The police asked the public to provide clues or images of the moment of the attack, through an internet portal created specifically for the crime. They also launched an appeal to residents to avoid the area where the attack took place and stay at home.

City Anniversary

The attack occurred around 9.40pm (local time), when an unidentified man stabbed randomly people attending a party to celebrate the city’s 650th anniversary.

The action was classified as an “attack,” a police spokeswoman said. She rejected media reports that the act had already been classified as a “terrorist attack.” The spokeswoman also declined to comment on an allegation published by the Bild tabloid that the attacker spoke Arabic.

“The attacker stabbed people at random. That’s why we assume it was an attack,” said Wuppertal police spokesman Sascha Kresta, saying that according to his information, the attacker had deliberately tried to stab the victims in the neck area.

“The police are racing against time”

State Interior Minister Herbert Reul visited the site and said the attacker probably acted alone. He said there was “concrete evidence” so far, noting that police were racing against time to find the attacker.

“The question now is how to catch the attacker. Someone arbitrarily attacked people out of nowhere and killed them without us having any idea why,” Reul stressed.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said she was “deeply shocked” by the “brutal attack”, in a post on the social network X.

He also stressed that “the security services are doing everything in their power to detain the perpetrator of the attack and determine his motives.”
